How do I receive 911 dialing with Nextera service?

Nextera automatically makes 911 emergency dialling available when you sign up for service.  During signup you will be prompted to complete physical address location information.  If you need to change this address, you can edit it via MyNextera Online Account Manager.

What is the difference between 911 on a traditional phone vs Nextera VoIP?

The greatest difference between Nextera 911 service and traditional 911 service is the reliance upon a functioning adapter and full power.  Electrical power outages and disruptions to your high-speed internet connection will deactivate Nextera service and you will be unable to complete 911 calls through Nextera.

Also it is important to remember that Nextera service is portable to any location with a broadband internet access.  If you travel, you can take the Nextera phone adapter with you and your service will work.  However, you must update your new address location in order for 911 to function properly.  To change your address, log-on to MyNextera online account manager.  It may take up to 24 hours to update.

How does 911 work?

Nextera routes your calls to the Public Service Answering Point (PSAP) which provides emergency services in your area.  The appropriate PSAP is determined by the physical address you supply Nextera.  If we do not have the correct address, your call will not be routed to the correct PSAP for your area and could delay required emergency services.

Why do I have to give my physical address for 911?

Unlike traditional phone service, VoIP is portable.  For example, you can have a Phoenix number and but you receive calls (you are physically located) in Minneapolis.  Notifying us of your physical address is the only way to locate the appropriate PSAP serving your current physical location.  It is very important to keep your physical address current on your account.

What if I travel with Nextera service?

If you travel with the Nextera adapter for an extended period (such as a vacation or move), you should change your emergency calling service address by logging into your MyNextera Online Account Manager.  This will ensure your call is routed to the appropriate PSAP.
