Metro Ethernet

Nextera’s Metro Ethernet service helps multi-location enterprises simplify and consolidate network management. Metro Ethernet provides local area network (LAN)-to-LAN connectivity between two or more customer locations within a metro area and is suitable for data applications that includes data file transfer, Internet access, off-site data storage and access to hosting, outsourced mail and file server service, and outsourced application services. The service is also well-suited to voice and video applications. Connect your primary data center or headquarters to the Nextera network and extend Ethernet connectivity to branch locations without having to manage connections to every location.

How Metro Ethernet Works

Metro Ethernet provides local area network LAN-to-LAN connectivity between two or more locations within a metro area. The Metro Ethernet solution is based on distributed Layer 3 switching and shared transport data bandwidth. The local loop that extends to the customer premises can typically be provided via wireless, fiber or copper facilities.

  • Flexible: Service can be configured as point-to-point or multipoint servicing multiple sites.
  • Scalable: Bandwidth options from 1 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
  • Service Guarantee: Service Level Agreement (SLA) goals of up to 99.99 percent availability with Quality of Service (QoS).
  • Versatile: A completely meshed native Ethernet network.
  • Multiple VLAN Connections: Allow one port to support multiple sites and applications.

  • Cost Effective: Metro Ethernet bandwidth can be less expensive than traditional time division multiplexing (TDM) point-to-point private line services. You have the potential to reduce your total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for specialized WAN support expertise, reducing the cost of WAN equipment with lower cost Ethernet switches and routers, as well as consolidating server/facilities.
  • Flexibility: Scalable bandwidth increments let you pay only for what you need.
  • Productivity Enhancing: Increase your productivity by enabling virtual work groups across a metropolitan area (i.e., you gain connectivity–both internally and externally-to those entities you regularly communicate with; for example, your suppliers).
  • Quick Turnaround: Easily upgradeable; your service can typically be up and running within 30 business days after service order and acceptance.
  • Reliability: Service has a standard 99.99 percent SLA availability objective.

  • Private Networks: Utilizing Nextera’s extensive metro network, we are able to provide connectivity to one or more locations with Dedicated Internet Access and Private Network Ethernet Connectivity, or a combination of both. Receive 1.5Mbps to 100Mbps or higher.
  • Scalable Bandwidth: Configure your wireless connection to be scalable on demand, it’s as easy as “turning up the dial,” and Nextera typically can make it happen in a matter of hours. Such bandwidth increases is perfect for growing companies, special events, meetings, conferences, short term projects or for business continuity and disaster recovery purposes.
  • Voice Services: Nextera's Metro Ethernet service can be bundled with our industry leading VoIP platform which includes a variety of voice services including: local, long distance, host PBX, SIP Trunking or Dynamic T-1. These converged voice and data services are dynamic which allows maximum usage for bandwidth for data when voice is not being utilized.
  • Ethernet Private Line: Point-to-point Ethernet connectivity ideal for businesses looking for dedicated bandwidth between office locations.
  • Ethernet Hub: Point-to-multipoint Ethernet solution ideal for connecting branches or offices to centralized headquarters or data center.

Did You Know?

Business class VoIP calls are carried over a private, managed network that ensures Quality of Service (QoS) for both voice and data traffic. Private networks connect to the internet and to the PSTN to ensure that voice and data traffic can reach users who are not part of the private network.
